I talk about mindset…a lot. But what does it have to do with writing?
Having a healthy mindset is the key to reaching creative goals without being stopped by self doubt, fear, and creative blocks. A healthy mindset helps you ignore your inner critic, that “mean girl” voice that says you aren’t good enough, talented enough, or will never be successful.
A healthy mindset is exactly what helped me finally finish my book.
Before this year, I tried SO many times to finish my novel. Every time I would reach some amount of progress, my inner critic would have something to say that would make me want to just throw in the towel. In fact, many times, I did.
For months at a time, I wouldn’t write. I would be convinced I just didn’t have what it took to be the writer I wanted to be. I felt like I didn’t know enough. That my story wasn’t good enough.
Fast forward to this past year where I finally finished my novel–with ease, no less! I’d done extensive mindset work and was ready to take on the task of meeting my creative goals head-on. I went to work. And worked. And worked. Until I had a completed novel before me.
Why was it so much easier this time around?
Was my inner critic gone? Did my “mean girl” voice stop telling me my story sucked? No. But I had the right mindset to know she was wrong, and to tell her to shut her sassy mouth.
How did I build this new mindset?
There were a number of things that ultimately helped. If you’ve read my previous posts, you’ll know that I meditated, joined group coaching programs, and got emotional support from friends and professionals. You’ll also know that I wrote affirmations.
Creating, saying, and writing affirmations is probably the easiest way to start to change your mindset. Affirmations work with the universal Law of Attraction to use your thoughts and emotions to radically change your reality.
It takes a little leap of faith, if mindset work and Law of Attraction is new to you, but even the least woo-woo person can agree that a positive mindset works wonders on daily life. It lowers stress by raising up those feel good hormones. It puts you in a better mood. And affirmations are a GREAT way to bring some positivity into your life!
What are affirmations?
Affirmations are positive statements that evoke the thoughts and feelings of what you absolutely desire. Saying them, repeating them, and FEELING them help you work with the Law of Attraction to bring your dreams to life. To create an affirmation, you state what you want from the point of view of ALREADY HAVING IT.
They don’t need to be true RIGHT NOW. You just have to FEEL like they are. To harness their power, they should be stated either in present or past tense.
For example, here are the exact affirmations I’ve been using today:
“I allow my life, business, and writing career to be easy.”
“Money flows to me easily, effortlessly, and abundantly.”
“I am publishing my novel with ease in perfect timing.”
“I am a published author with more success than I ever imagined.”
“I am a fantastic fantasy author.”
All these affirmations feel SO good to me when I write them and say them. They make me smile and make my heart feel alive. THAT kind of feeling is what you’re going for. These kinds of affirmations are what got me through periods of fear and self-doubt in the writing process of my novel. They got me through the anxiety of editing. They are getting me through the impatient stage of planning for publication.
And they can help you too! Whether you’re a blogger, novelist, musician, or artist, affirmations can help you align with your creative goals in a magical way. I know what it’s like to be crippled with fear. I know what it’s like to question your talents and self worth in the creative world. I know what it’s like to face rejection by agents. And I know that affirmations help my mindset in a way that protect me from the things that used to hold me back. In fact, I believe so strongly in them that I wrote an entire mini ebook about it (which is now FREE for you!)
I am SO excited that I get to share this mini ebook with you, my readers. OMG I can hardly contain myself!!! Ok, I’m contained. Here’s your link to download your FREE copy of 102 Affirmations for Writers, Artists, and Other Creatives.
Why did I write this ebook? I was so tired of the stigma of the tortured artist, the brooding author, and the moody musician. I strongly believe there is a place for positive, spiritual, woo-woo writers in ANY creative field! I don’t care if you write erotica or horror, paint creepy pictures, or sing in a punk band–YOU can rock your craft and still be a positive, aligned, balanced, happy person. It is my damn mission to see the end of that shitty stigma and to shine light in all the dark corners of creativity. This ebook is my way of sharing that vision with other creatives. I hope you love it!
So are you ready to shine some light into your own creative mindspace? Click the image or link above to download your free ebook and then tell me what you think! What affirmations are you using? Did you create your own? How will you choose to incorporate them into your daily life?
I’m so happy you’re here, you creative badass. I’m so happy you are expressing your joy through creativity. Now go out there and change the world! Or at least your mind.
