Does writing ever seem like a struggle?
Perhaps some days, you’d even call it a chore. How can something you love so much feel completely stripped of joy at times?
It starts off as a passion. It’s fun. It fuels you. Then this starts to happen…
Self doubt. You wonder if you even have what it takes to be a writer.
Anxiety over deadlines. Instead of writing you find yourself watching your timer and wondering if you’ll get enough words to meet your goals. After a while, you dread writing all together.
Upper limits. You begin a new phase in your creative journey, step out of your comfort zone, and suddenly, everything seems to go wrong.
Perceived failure. Things didn’t go the way you thought they would, or you missed a goal. You wonder if writing is even worth it.
Comparisonitis. You find yourself obsessing over some other author’s amazing Instagram feed or tales of instant success and wonder why you can’t have the same.
Have you experienced any of this? I know I have! I’ve literally experienced ALL of this in the past month alone!
So what do you do? How do you bring that joy back? How do you keep going when the very thing you use to love makes you want to quit?
Here are six steps to a joyful writing life.
1.) KNOW YOUR WHY…FOR YOU. It can be easy to know why you write for others–to bring joy to your readers, to get good reviews, to hear how happy you made someone, to know you’re an inspiration. But why are you writing for YOU? The answer to this question is KEY when outside validation fails you, or when things feel like they are going wrong. Remind yourself why you love to write–how it makes you feel–and why you started in the first place.
2.) AFFIRM YOUR WORTH. Positive affirmations are a perfect way to spark that joy, remind you why you’re awesome, and feel good about yourself. You know you are a creative badass. You know you are an awesome writer. Whether you speak it or write it, what positive affirmations can you use to supercharge your self-worth as a writer? Need help crafting affirmations about writing? 3.) MAKE YOUR WRITING ENVIRONMENT JOYFUL. What makes you joyful? Can you incorporate any of that into your writing environment or writing time? Do you like fresh flowers? Or perhaps you could light your favorite candle. How about writing in a plush bathrobe? The possibilities are endless.
4.) PRE-WRITING ROUTINES. Pre-writing routines can help you get into the mindset that it’s time to write. What can you do prepare for a joyful writing session? Do you like to meditate? Pray? Journal? Exercise? What fun things can you do that will help trigger you that it’s time to write? Maybe you could pour yourself a cup of coffee, tea, or wine, and put on your favorite writing music. I start every morning with reiki, meditation, and journaling/affirmations.
5.) CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESS DAILY. Don’t focus on what you failed at this week, let “failures” be a learning experience and shift your focus on success. If you didn’t meet your goals, DID you accomplish? Did something unexpected come up? Celebrate yourself for handling it. Did you spend more time doing something else that wasn’t on your to-do list? Celebrate it! Feeling like you’ve made no progress? Look back on your week, month, year, or your writing journey as a whole and remind yourself how much you’ve gotten done.
6.) HOLD YOUR VISION OF SUCCESS. No matter where you are now, always keep in mind that exciting vision you have for your future. Where do you see yourself in one month, one year, two year, or ten years? Whatever excites you most, hold that vision and remind yourself of it often. Remember what you’re working for! Remind yourself you have everything it takes to get there!
